A guide to what can and cannot go into a Stevenage Skip Hire hired skip

At Stevenage Skip Hire we are frequently asked what waste materials can be placed into the hired skips we supply. So we thought it would be a good idea to offer a quick guide as to what is and is not acceptable.

Electrical appliances and electrical equipment is referred to as WEEE waste. This stands for waste electrical and electronic equipment and as a general rule, it should not go into a skip. Appliances such as electrical equipment such as televisions, dishwashers, freezers or fridges have to be taken to a registered waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling facility. Please ensure they are not mixed with any other general waste.

A definite no go for any Stevenage Skip Hire skip is asbestos. There are very strict rules for the disposal of this deadly material. Remember that asbestos is very hazardous and harmful and it is illegal to recycle or reuse materials containing asbestos.

It is best never to touch this material unless you happen to be an asbestos removal professional. The public should always use a specialist asbestos removal contractor if there is any asbestos in your property. You could be forgiven for thinking that this material is no longer a threat as it was banned from use in construction many years ago, but many properties around the country still have asbestos contained in all sorts of places.

Should you suspect that asbestos is present in your property, leave it alone and contact your local council who will be able to assist and advise you on how you can deal with it and ultimately how to have it removed and disposed of in the correct way.

Batteries should never put into your Stevenage Skip Hire skip and this applies to any battery from a vehicle one to the type you power your torch with. Batteries contain different chemicals and metals, meaning that one will have to be treated separately to others. You can take the batteries to battery recycling boxes, which are often located at your local supermarket. Alternatively, you can search online for a battery recycling centre around your area.

Clearly car batteries will not be accepted by these establishments. A local garage will be able to advise you on how you can correctly dispose of your old car batteries. They must never go in a skip because they have high traces of lead, which is very toxic to the environment and requires to be handled in a responsible way.

Medical waste products should never be placed in a skip. The risk of infection and contamination is just too great. There are specialist companies that are licensed to deal with this type of waste. Anything from unused or used needles to biological waste requires special treatment and is most definitely not suitable for skips. Your local Department of Health will be able to advise you accordingly.

Gas cylinders, whether spent or otherwise must never go into a Stevenage Skip Hire skip. Skip hire companies are not authorised to accept gas cylinders. Even apparently empty ones can still be hazardous. There are quite a few different options for recycling your gas cylinders as well as bottles, and usually, you can take the bottle back to where you bought it. They can refill and then reuse the gas cylinder and many caravan enthusiasts will have owned the same gas cylinders for many years. To find out about the companies that recycle plus dispose of gas cylinders, you can get this information from the British Compressed Gases Association.

Fluorescent bulbs contain materials that are hazardous, such as mercury, so you should never put them in a skip. Use a specialist service to handle your fluorescent bulbs and also the local council recycling centre in your area will probably have a facility for accepting your old fluorescent bulbs and strip lights.

You are not allowed to put gypsum and plasterboard waste into your hired skip. Government initiatives are all aiming to recycle most gypsum and plasterboard waste, so you will have to take the waste to specific recycling plants. Although some skip hire companies will accept plasterboard for recycling, you must not mix plasterboard with other types of waste.

Tyres

Car and bike tyres are another waste item that have no place in a hired skip from Stevenage Skip Hire. This is why when you have your tyre professionally changed, the fitting company will correctly dispose of the old tyre. They will either factor the cost of this disposal into the quoted price or even free of charge.

Paint tins can only be placed in a skip if they are completely empty. Should your paint tins still have paint inside, contact your local council to arrange the correct and responsible disposal.

You can put soil in a skip, just as long as it is not contaminated with any hazardous materials. Soil that is contaminated with oil or other hazardous substances should never go in a skip.

You can put an old toilet or bath in a Stevenage Skip Hire skip. In general, most of your non electrical waste can go in a skip.

What can be placed into a skip hired from Stevenage Skip Hire

Before hiring a skip, you should firstidentify what waste materials you have to dispose of that can go in the skip. People generally think that everything can be placed in a hired skip and are very surprised when they discover that they cannot put all their waste in. Health and safety regulations are the main reason why certain types of waste should not end up in a skip and there are valid reasons why these items are restricted. However, most items that will not be accepted by skip hire companies will usually be collected, disposed of or recycled by your local authority.
